Coconut farmers in Ben Tre province, Vietnam, are facing challenges due to low prices and pest attacks. The price of desiccated coconut has dropped significantly, leading to large stocks and losses. Additionally, over 990 hectares of coconut gardens are infected with blackhead worms, a rise of 45 hectares from the previous week. Despite efforts to control the pest, the results are not satisfactory. The province has released over 35 million bees to help control the worms. Ben Tre is the country's largest area of coconut trees, with over 77,000 hectares, producing over 650 million fruits per year and generating over 350 million USD in export turnover of coconut products annually, which accounts for about 30% of the province's total export turnover.
