Netherlands: BEST greenhouse was good for the cultivation of raspberries and blackberries

The BEST greenhouse at the Greenhouse Horticulture business unit of Wageningen University & Research in Bleiswijk, which is covered with bubble wrap, was used for 2 crops in 2020. Raspberries were grown in the spring and blackberries in the autumn. The goal of achieving good production in these crops with limited CO2 and energy consumption has been achieved. The BEST greenhouse is a multi-tunnel greenhouse covered with bubble wrap that is specially designed for crops with limited heat demand. The greenhouse was developed to explore the opportunities for climate-neutral cultivation for these crops as well. The aim is to further increase production while maintaining the minimum product quality. The spring crop of raspberries was planted on January 9, 2020. The first fruits are harvested around 1 April and the last in the last week of June. 4.4 kg per m2 in class 1 was harvested with an average fruit weight of 5.2 grams each and an additional 260 grams per m2 in class 2.
