In 2025, Brazil reached a historic milestone in livestock by receiving from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) the certificate that recognizes the country as free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. The recognition is the result of more than six decades of continuous and coordinated work by the Agricultural Defense Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SDA/Mapa) and places the country at a new level of sanitary excellence, expanding access for Brazilian production to more demanding international markets. In addition to the historic sanitary status, the SDA's performance stood out in other strategic fronts. The Federal Laboratory for Agricultural Defense in São Paulo (LFDA/SP) was accredited by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as a Reference Center for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, expanding Brazil's role in the surveillance and control of diseases of global impact.
