São Paulo – Brazil has radically changed its position in the international sesame market over the last ten years, moving from an unrepresentative role to becoming the seventh largest global producer and the second largest exporter. The opening of the Chinese market at the end of last year gave a boost to the external insertion of the product, but other regions of the world, such as the Arab countries, have also discovered Brazilian sesame and are increasingly sourcing it from the country. Data compiled by the Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services (Mdic) show that Brazil exported US$ 280.6 million worth of sesame seeds from January to August this year, more than double – 127% more – than the same period last year. The volume shipped to the international market increased from 82 thousand tons in the first eight months of 2024 to 239.7 thousand tons in the same period of 2025, an increase of 190%, or almost triple.
