Embrapa method reinforces traceability, values native products and opens the way for sustainable certifications in meliponiculture Two new industrial processes developed by researchers at Embrapa Environment (SP) promise to transform the quality control of stingless bee honey in Brazil. The technologies, based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR), achieved 100% accuracy in both identifying adulterations — such as the addition of sugar syrups in the feeding of the colonies — and determining the species of bee that produces the honey, a breakthrough for traceability and commercial valuation of these products. The results were obtained in a project coordinated by Aline Biasoto and Cristiano Menezes, researchers at Embrapa Environment, with the scientific partnership of Edson Rezende, owner of Entreposto Vida Natural, and Carolina Santos Silva, a researcher from the Technical Research Centre of Finland – VTT, Finland.
