Bulgaria is the leading importer of sunflower seeds from Ukraine in the EU, accounting for 40% of total EU imports in the 2022/23 marketing year, as reported by the USDA. Despite an 8% increase in oilseed planted area, Bulgaria's total oilseed production remained steady at 2.4M tonnes due to heat and drought conditions. Sunflower production rose by 4%, but rapeseed crop was 20% lower. By the end of February, Bulgarian exports of sunflower meal and oil reached over 400,000 tonnes and 360,000 tonnes, respectively, making up 66% and 47% of total EU exports respectively. However, local farmers express concerns over imported sunflower seeds depressing local prices. The USDA predicts higher oilseed production for the 2023/24 marketing year if favourable weather conditions and recovered soil moisture reserves are achieved.
