In the first quarter of 2021, Bulgaria prevented the import of 1,203 tons of food from countries that failed to meet EU requirements, marking 57% of the total food denied entry in all of 2020. The confiscated foods included 560 tons of citrus and 190 tons of sweet peppers due to excessive pesticides, 60 tons of hazelnuts and peanuts for aflatoxin exceeding the standard, and 13 tons of honey for missing necessary information. All inspections are conducted in accordance with EU rules and laws, with the seized food either destroyed or returned to the country of origin. Early warning information is distributed across the EU through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
