A dispute in Kazakhstan's food industry, particularly within the oil and fat sector, has led to calls for the prioritization of domestic raw materials for production. This conflict is part of a larger issue involving the use of raw materials for various food products like margarine, ketchup, and mayonnaise. The oil and fat industry, which includes several large companies and 36 processing plants, is seeking state support to decrease reliance on imports, especially palm oil. The Ministry of Agriculture is already providing preferential loans, investment subsidies, and other support to boost domestic production. There is potential for increased export revenue if domestic oil and fat products are prioritized, and efforts are being made to enhance production by incorporating science and expanding crop fields.
