The Philippine Court of Appeals has recently issued a cease and desist order to the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) and the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PRRI), effectively stopping the distribution of genetically modified rice and eggplant, namely Bt Eggplant and Golden Rice. This decision was influenced by a petition from various groups and individuals expressing concerns about the potential health and environmental risks associated with these GMOs. Citing the precautionary principle due to unresolved safety debates, the court has revoked the Biosafety Permit for Golden Rice and demanded that government agencies present enhanced risk assessment methods.
