Brazil: Cachaça must follow quality and identity standards

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa) published Ordinance No. 539 to establish the Identity and Quality Standard (PIQ) for sugarcane brandy and cachaça sold throughout the national territory. The objective is to harmonize the production and consumption of distilled sugarcane beverages typical of Brazil. According to Mapa, the standard was prepared based on technical criteria with Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA), considering the contributions received by society. One of the novelties is the definition of Cachaça de Alambique.
