Cajamarca leads the regions with the highest export growth in Peru

The Cajamarca region in Peru has seen a reversal of economic decline starting from 2019, driven by a surge in exports and the revitalization of key sectors such as agriculture, livestock, and tourism, as led by the Regional Government of Cajamarca. This turnaround has led to the region's GDP surpassing S/ 11 billion in 2019, a figure not seen in the past decade. The region's GDP grew by 4.8% in 2019 and 4.5% in 2020 in the agriculture, livestock, and forestry sectors. Additionally, the number of local businesses exporting products has grown from 19 in 2010 to over 70 in 2020. In 2020, the region's main export destinations were Switzerland, Canada, and the United States. The region's tourism sector also experienced growth, generating S/ 263 million in 2019, despite a drop to S/ 161 million in 2020 due to the pandemic. Efforts are being made to promote sustainable tourism and recover lost ground from the pandemic. The region's competitiveness has improved, as shown by its ranking in the Regional Competitiveness Index (Incore) 2021 by the Peruvian Institute of Economy (IPE).
