California has passed a landmark bill, the California Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act, banning octopus farming and the sale of farmed octopus products, making it the second law of its kind globally. The bill, which addresses ethical and environmental concerns, received unanimous approval from the California Senate and was supported by various animal welfare and environmental organizations. The OCTO Act aims to protect octopuses from the potential negative impacts of farming, including pressure on wild fish populations, overuse of antibiotics, and suffering in captivity. The Aquatic Life Institute is leading a global campaign to ban octopus farming, with support from the RSPCA and Friend of the Sea.
