The Cameroonian Ministry of Agriculture is planning to boost local rice production to 750,000 tons by 2030 in an effort to reduce imports. The strategy includes modernizing and mechanizing agriculture, restructuring the sector, and involving the private sector. The government aims to develop 60,000 hectares for irrigated rice and 200,000 hectares for rainfed rice, and produce 6,000 tons of certified seed per year. The project is expected to cost around CFA385 billion, funded by development partners, the private sector, and the public investment budget. This could potentially achieve a rice self-sufficiency rate of 97%.
