Canada is implementing import restrictions on US romaine lettuce for the second year in a row, starting September 28, 2022, and ending December 22, 2022, in an effort to prevent E. coli O157:H7 outbreaks. These restrictions are in response to several outbreaks linked to romaine lettuce from the California Salinas Valley counties of Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Benito, and Monterey. Canadian importers are required to declare that the product does not originate from these counties or provide an attestation form and Certificate of Analysis for each shipment, showing the romaine does not contain detectable levels of the pathogen. Romaine from California or Arizona can be imported if it is handled by a certified member of the respective Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement. The food must also meet specific sanitary conditions as per the Safe Food for Canadians Regulations.
