Canada has stopped the process to issue a fourth licence for the Arctic surf clam fishery, aiming to increase Indigenous access to the industry. This decision comes after the sale of Clearwater Seafoods to a Mi’kmaq First Nations and Premium Brands coalition, leading to the transfer of the three existing licences to a company owned by the Mi’kmaq. The government's move is designed to provide long-term certainty to the communities involved and continue the economic benefits of the fishery to Indigenous groups. The government is focusing on sustainable and collaborative fisheries arrangements to benefit both Indigenous and non-Indigenous fish harvesters, promoting reconciliation and increasing Indigenous participation in the ocean economy.
