The Canadian government, led by Minister Joyce Murray, has announced a more cautious approach to managing the Pacific herring fishery due to increased risks to wild salmon. Most commercial herring fisheries will be closed, with exceptions for First Nations food, social, and ceremonial fisheries. The Strait of Georgia will see a 10% harvest rate with a maximum total allowable catch of 7,850 tonnes. This decision aims to provide sustainable fishing opportunities and increase stock abundance, benefiting the ecosystem. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) will release the draft Integrated Fisheries Management Plan soon. The measure is part of efforts to conserve herring stocks, a crucial food source for salmon and other species, in the face of declining salmon numbers and habitat damage from natural disasters.
