Chicken prices in south and east India have surged by over 25% due to a combination of factors, including high bird mortality rates caused by heat waves and water shortages, and increased demand due to more money circulating because of general elections. The prices have fluctuated in the north, with retail prices remaining stable due to the sector being controlled by middlemen. Prices are expected to ease with the onset of monsoon rainfall. In Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, prices reached Rs 135-140/kg at the farm gate and over Rs 300/kg in retail due to humidity impacting bird health. Farmers in Maharashtra and Karnataka have reduced bird counts by about 20% due to anticipated water shortages.
