China is grappling with outbreaks of African swine fever, with 18 of its regions already experiencing new cases, including Liaoning, Shandong, Hebei, and Shanxi. The disease, which can have a 100% mortality rate among pigs, has no effective vaccine and is highly contagious. The disease had previously resulted in the loss of over 130 million pigs in China between 2017 and 2019. The current outbreak is predicted to drop China's pork production by 8-15%, leading to potential price increases for the world's leading producer and consumer of pork.
