China has initiated an investigation into beef imports from January 2019 to June 2024, seeking to safeguard local production amid claims of damage from foreign competition. This investigation, requested by Chinese producers and expected to last eight months, could potentially lead to the protection of strategic sectors, although no preliminary measures have been implemented and the current 12% tariff on beef imports remains. The investigation covers beef imports from all countries, including Brazil, a significant beef exporter to China. The Brazilian government and the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries have pledged to collaborate and provide evidence to defend Brazilian beef exports, emphasizing their quality and adherence to stringent health and safety standards.
