In the first five months of 2021, China imported 1.2 million tons of dragon fruit from Vietnam, a 138% increase from the previous year, accounting for 62.18% of the year's plan. Vietnamese dragon fruit made up half of China's total imports from Vietnam during this period. Besides dragon fruit, Vietnam also exported mangoes, watermelons, and other fresh fruits to China, seeing a significant increase in exports compared to the previous year. To meet the demand, Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has allocated a substantial area for planting and packing facilities. However, the surge in production has led to challenges in consumption and pricing, especially due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, Cambodia is gearing up to export dragon fruit to China, having learned from the successful export of mangoes. Cambodia has dedicated 1,000 hectares of land to grow 1 million dragon fruit trees for the export market. This development could introduce more competition for Vietnamese dragon fruit in the Chinese market.
