Climatologists warn: three years left to limit warming to 1.5°C

The Earth could be on track to breach the symbolic 1.5°C warming limit in just three years at current levels of carbon dioxide emissions, the BBC reports. It is a stark warning from more than 60 of the world’s leading climate scientists in the most up-to-date assessment of the state of global warming. Almost 200 countries agreed to try to limit the rise in global temperatures to 1.5°C above late 1800s levels in a landmark 2015 deal aimed at avoiding some of the worst impacts of climate change. But countries are continuing to burn record amounts of coal, oil and gas and cut down carbon-rich forests, putting the achievement of this international target at risk. “Things are going in the wrong direction.
