Despite facing challenges in 2020 due to public health circumstances and restrictions, Colima continues to contribute at least 50% to Mexico's papaya exports. Producer Nasario Rodríguez mentioned that the market rebounded in the second week of January 2021. The state has approximately 2 thousand hectares under papaya production, with the Maradol variety still being the most popular. However, demand for hybrid papayas like 'The Intense', 'Maradona', and 'Red Passion' is increasing internationally. The production cost per hectare is around 220 thousand pesos, taking into account safety and post-harvest management.
