Colombia has seen an 18% increase in cape gooseberry (aguaymanto) exports in the first five months of this year, according to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), continuing a trend from 2021. The country exports the fruit to 17 countries, including Spain, UK, UAE, Brazil, and the US, primarily from the regions of Cundinamarca, Antioquia, Boyacá, and Nariño. Alejandro Ángel, CEO of Caribbean Exotics and president of the Uchuva Analdex Exporters Committee, credits the increase to the recovery of the hotel, restaurant, and cafeteria sector. Flavia Santoro Trujillo, president of ProColombia, highlights Colombia's leading role as the main producer and exporter of the fruit and plans to further promote it at the Fruit Attraction fair in Madrid.
