Commodities/China: Soybean imports rise 11.4% in 2023, to 99.41 million tons

By Ana Ritti São Paulo, 01/12/2024 - China imported 9.823 million tons of soybeans in December 2023, according to preliminary data published today by the country's General Customs Administration (Gacc). The volume represents an increase of 24% compared to November 2023, but a decrease of 6.9% compared to December 2022 (10.55 million tons). As a result, in 2023, soybean purchases by China totaled 99.41 million tons, an increase of 11.4% in 2022. According to Gacc, China imported 811 thousand tons of edible vegetable oils last month, a drop of 12% compared to November and 11.4% compared to the same month of the previous year. In value, purchases reached US$798.5 million. From January to December 2023, 9.812 million tons of vegetable oils were purchased, 51.4% more than in 2022. Chinese imports of meat and offal totaled 566 thousand tons in the last month of last year, 1.6% more than in November, but 19.5% less than in December 2022.
