France is a leading producer and exporter of various vegetable proteins in the European Union, despite depending on meal for beef and dairy production, which accounts for nearly 40% of the EU's needs. To reduce this dependence and achieve autonomy in non-GMO soybean meal, France has set a goal to double the area under soybeans, peas, pulses, alfalfa, and fodder legumes by 2030. The National Plant Protein Strategy also aims to make France self-sufficient in rapeseed and sunflower seeds. However, the implementation of binding regulations and other factors have increased production costs. The balance of rapeseed and sunflower supply and demand shows a decrease in self-sufficiency over the years, with a reliance on imports. The strategy also includes an increase in the cultivation of linseed, which is currently the third most important oilseed crop in France.
