The president of the Sicilian Blood Orange Consortium is calling for the immediate suspension of imports of all citrus fruits from South Africa due to the high number of batches affected by citrus black spot. The consortium is pushing for the EU to apply the same measures as other countries that have banned the export of olives affected by Xylella. They are also urging for stricter controls and the application of cold treatment to incoming citrus fruits to prevent the spread of disease.
