Seventeen pivotal decisions, including 12 binding recommendations, have been adopted by 20 countries and the European Union at the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) to enhance the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The decisions aim to address the challenges facing the sector, such as overfishing and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, and include measures for the management of numerous priority species and the establishment of fisheries restricted areas. The GFCM also highlighted the progress made by member countries in updating their national laws to target illegal fishing and awarded compliance awards to several countries for their integration of GFCM decisions into their legal frameworks.
