The Association of Potato Growers of Castilla y León (APPACYL) has revised its prediction of production cost increases for 2022, stating that the true increase is likely to be between €1,800 and €2,000 per hectare, up from €1,400, due to rising electricity costs. This equates to an increase of 4 cents per kilo. Despite most contracts being already finalized with increases of 2-3 cents per kilo, APPACYL warns growers against entering into contracts at prices lower than 20 cents for consumption potatoes and 17 cents for industrial potatoes. Other European potato growing countries are experiencing similar production cost hikes and are advising growers to ensure that contracts cover production costs.
