The Department of Agriculture (DA) in the Philippines is set to review the National Dairy Development Act of 1995 to increase the country's milk production. The review will focus on the law's provision that mandates commercial milk processors and domestic dairy cooperatives to agree on the volume of locally produced milk to be absorbed by the commercial sector. The Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI) has proposed that the DA enforce a rule requiring commercial milk processors and traders to source at least 5% of their total requirement from local producers. This comes as the Philippines imported $1.6 billion worth of milk, primarily in powdered form, from Australia, New Zealand, and the US in 2022.
