Dairi Regency in North Sumatra, Indonesia is working to become a premier vanilla producer amidst disorganized development and quality issues. The regional government is taking steps towards institutional development and partnerships to add value for farmers and facilitate the formation of the first vanilla producer cooperative in North Sumatra. The cooperative will purchase wet vanilla from farmers for processing into dry vanilla, with profits returned to members. The government is also exploring collaboration with the Indonesian Vanilla Council for gourmet quality processing and directing plantations towards organic certification. Additionally, the government plans to facilitate the development of home-based and community forest vanilla production, with a goal to become the largest producer of premium and organic vanilla in Sumatra and Indonesia.
