Portuguese milk producers have been impacted by rising feeding costs for dairy cows without a corresponding increase in the price of milk paid to them since 2021. The Ministry of Agriculture formed a subcommittee to address these issues, which confirmed the low price of milk in Portugal and a significant reduction in the number of cowsheds and producers. The government is being called upon to increase the base price paid to producers and create a 'milk observatory' to ensure milk prices are aligned with production costs.
