Dead Fish in Maritza River. Are Agricultural Chemicals to Blame?

Published Jun 30, 2025

Tridge summary

The dead fish in the Maritsa River is the result of poisoning with an agricultural pesticide. This was told to BNR by Georgi Georgiev from the "Olympic 2002" Association.

On Saturday, fishermen discovered dead fish in the Maritsa River, near the village of Rogosh. According to Georgiev, hundreds of kilograms of dead fish from local species such as mullet, barbel, and sturgeon were found.

The association's investigations indicate that the river pollution occurred between the villages of Rogosh and Skutare, where two or three agricultural producers are operating in the area.

"Probably one of them sprayed their crops with a pesticide and then the residue of this substance was dumped into the river," Georgiev stated.

According to him, the danger comes not only to the ecosystem but also from the fact that several pump stations that supply drinking water to the Maritsa municipality residents draw water from the river - he warned.

The investigation into the case continues by the Basin Directorate and RIOSV in Plovdiv, which have taken samples and are awaiting results.
