In the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, stakeholders have urgently called for the cessation of water-intensive crop cultivation, which is responsible for consuming 97% of the region's water resources. This drastic measure is aimed at preventing the further depletion of the water bed and ensuring the sustainability of water availability for future generations. The region is already grappling with drought and desertification, and faces an increasing demand for water, with projections showing a significant rise in agricultural and potable water needs by 2050. Additionally, the article addresses the problem of unauthorized well drilling, noting that the Draa-Oued Noun Water Basin Agency has recorded violations and issued licenses for well drilling in the midst of a severe water shortage, further aggravated by the overexploitation of water resources and the cultivation of water-intensive crops.
