Panennews.com - The opening of foreign investment in the egg-laying chicken subsector needs to be carefully studied. This is because currently, the national egg production is experiencing a surplus with abundant stock exceeding national needs. This was stated by Professor of Social Economics of Animal Husbandry at Gadjah Mada University (UGM), Prof. Budi Guntoro. According to Budi, data shows that national chicken egg production in 2024 reached about 6.34 million tons. This number is projected to increase to more than 6.5 million tons this year. This figure has exceeded the national consumption needs which are in the range of 6.22 million tons. “This means that Indonesia is not facing a shortage of eggs, but rather a structural surplus,” said the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry at UGM, on UGM campus, Monday (27/4/2026).
