A new potato variety called 'Tongil' has been developed by Professor Young-Seok Lim of Kangwon National University in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and ICT. The new variety, which was announced at a meeting in Boseong, South Jeolla Province, has been under development since 2011 and has been protected as a new variety since last August. The 'Tongil' potato variety has shown to have higher crop yield and disease resistance than existing varieties such as ‘Sumi’, ‘Chubaek’, and ‘Tongil’. The average yield of ‘Tongil’ potatoes is 44.5 tons per hectare, which is nearly twice the yield of ‘Sumi’. The development of this new potato variety is expected to benefit the local potato industry.
