Around 15,000 hectares of rice fields in Sri Lanka have been affected by the current drought, primarily in the South and North-West states. The Agriculture Minister, Mahinda Amaraweera, stated that the damage will be evaluated in order to provide compensation to the affected farmers. The ongoing dry spell, predicted to last until September, threatens the production of paddy, a key staple food in the country.
