Sicily is experiencing heavy rainfall after a period of drought, raising hopes of relief from the water crisis. However, the crisis has severely impacted the native Sicilian breeds, the Girgentana goat and the Modicana cow, with the number of reservoirs dropping by 22% in almost four weeks. Slow Food has expressed concern and is taking steps to protect these breeds through their Presidia. Breeders are facing challenges such as high temperatures, water scarcity, and the effects of drought on pastures. Efforts are being made to collect rainwater and maintain infrastructure, and farmers are appealing for the maintenance of existing infrastructures, increased storage capacity, and the planting of shrubs for animal grazing. The future remains uncertain as the drought continues to impact farming and the economy.
