A drought situation in Magura, Bangladesh, is causing concern among litchi growers, with fears of significant production losses and heavy financial losses for growers. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) had planted litchi on 588 hectares of land this season, but the past two weeks have seen temperatures around 40 degrees Celsius, hindering normal growth. Litchi growers and traders are expressing apprehension about the potential for substantial losses, with the lack of rain making litchi purchases unfavorable. The executive director of the agriculture-based NGO Palli Prokriti has urged the government to provide incentives to litchi growers to maintain employment in the sector. The Magura DAE officer has mentioned that light rain could benefit litchi growers and indicated that the need for incentives would be conveyed to higher authorities.
