The Cooperativa de Felgueiras, a major kiwi exporter in Portugal, is expressing concerns over the potential impact of ongoing drought on the kiwi production later in the year. Humberto Reis, a technician at the cooperative, emphasized the importance of adequate soil moisture from May to September for a good kiwi harvest. He also pointed out that the lack of cold in December, essential for floral differentiation, could negatively affect the fruit quality and quantity. Despite these concerns, Reis remains hopeful that with improved irrigation systems, production losses due to drought can be minimized, provided the drought does not reach a severely harsh level. For the vine and asparagus crops, which require less water, the situation is less critical.
