The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a 30% decrease in the national sale and export of prickly pear to the United States and Canada. The Mexican Union of Producers of Nopal, Tuna and Maguey is calling on agricultural authorities to include prickly pear in a promotion program due to its nutritional benefits and potential. The union, which has members in 17 states and 30,000 members, believes the fruit is undervalued and underestimated in Mexico, where it is usually relegated to the third level in consumption. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the union claims it can guarantee the supply of prickly pear, which is planted on 50,000 hectares across Mexico, mainly in Zacatecas, the State of Mexico, and Puebla.
