In the Netherlands, less meat is being consumed. This is the conclusion of research conducted by Wageningen University on behalf of animal welfare organization Wakker Dier. Compared to a year ago, we have started eating about half a kilo less meat. This brings meat consumption to its lowest level since measurements began in 2005. The researchers have looked at, among other things, how many animals have been slaughtered. The number of pigs, chickens, cattle, calves, sheep, goats, and horses has been recorded, and CBS statistics on the import and export of meat, the size of the stored meat stock in the Netherlands, and what is being used from it have also been examined. Last year, the total meat consumption of the Dutch was 74.4 kilos. This is the carcass weight: the weight of the animal including bones. About half of this is actually eaten.
