In the first half of 2024, South Korea became the fastest-growing market for Ecuadorean banana exports, with shipments surging by 271% to 2.2 million boxes, driven by the removal of tariffs and production issues in the Philippines. Ecuador's overall banana exports slightly decreased to nearly 189 million boxes. The South Korean government had temporarily eliminated tariffs on 28 fruits and vegetables, including Ecuadorean bananas, as a deflationary measure. Richard Salazar of Acorbanec expects the zero-tariff rate to continue into the second half of the year, with a Free Trade Agreement between Ecuador and South Korea anticipated later in 2024 to further boost exports. While exports to Japan rose by 7%, shipments to China dropped by 14% due to economic contraction, higher maritime freight costs, and high spot prices.
