In October 2022, the problems in the fruit and vegetable business of Ukraine related to the occupation of the southern territories and the energy crisis only intensified, which immediately led to corresponding changes in the foreign trade in vegetables and fruits. Thus, imports of many categories of greenhouse vegetables, as well as onions, carrots and other root crops, continued to grow rapidly, while the demand for import positions continued to sag. The volumes of purchases of onions by Ukrainian and importers remained record high.

Since October last year, they have grown more than 20 times, reaching 16.5 thousand tons. Imports of carrots, beets and other root crops were not so high, but also showed strong growth rates: Ukraine purchased 727 tons of carrots (33 times more than in October 2022), and 242 tons of beets and other root crops (22 times more). It should be noted that Poland has become the main beneficiary of such a rapid growth in demand for imported borscht vegetables in Ukraine. The share of Polish suppliers in the import of onion to Ukraine in October amounted to 44%, and in the carrot and beet segments it reached 54% and 80%, respectively. Other major suppliers of these products include Moldova, which exported 310 tons of carrots and 3.3 thousand tons of onions to Ukraine. In addition to Moldova and Poland, onions were also imported from a wide range of countries from Egypt and Spain to Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan.
