Zimbabwe's export marketing agency, ZimTrade, is encouraging farmers to start producing macadamia nuts due to the crop's increasing global demand and potential for earning foreign currency. The nuts, also known as the 'green diamond', are valued for their multiple uses and long harvesting life. Traditionally grown in Manicaland, but now shown to thrive across Zimbabwe with the right practices, macadamia production is presented as a profitable and sustainable investment. The trees can yield for 60 to 80 years and require minimal maintenance. Each tree needs about 5 kilogrammes of Compound J fertiliser annually. The nuts can be processed into various value-added products.
