Embrapa Intensifies Actions to Confront Growing Virus Occurrences in Tomato-Producing Regions

On one hand, tomato producers from various regions of Brazil celebrate advances in management technologies applied to tomato cultivation, with impacts on productivity, as shown, for example, by crops in Goiás – 31.4% of national production (Seapa/February 2025) – while on the other hand, concerns increase regarding the growing occurrence of viruses and their vectors (whiteflies, thrips, and aphids). Based on this reality, agents of the tomato production chain have sought help from research agencies to address this problem. Researchers, such as virologist Alice Nagata - and her team - from Embrapa Hortaliças, have been visiting crops and receiving leaf samples from tomato plants with virus symptoms with increasing frequency in recent years.
