The Estonian government has passed a bill to implement a 'lemonade tax' on sugary drinks, aimed at promoting public health by incentivizing the consumption of lower-sugar beverages. Set to take effect on January 1, 2026, the tax will apply to drinks containing more than 5 grams of sugar per 100 milliliters, with varying rates depending on the sugar content and the inclusion of sweeteners. However, unsweetened fruit, berry, vegetable juices, and milk or plant-based milk alternatives will be exempt from this tax. The legislation awaits parliamentary approval to become law.
