EU: Agri-food trade strengthens in September with the increase in surplus

The EU agri-food trade surplus reached 5.4 billion euros in September 2025, a 45% increase from August, reflecting a strong monthly recovery. However, the surplus is still 6% lower than that of September 2024. Between January and September, the accumulated surplus stood at 35.7 billion euros, 13.5 billion euros lower than the same period in 2024, mainly due to rising import prices, particularly for cocoa and coffee. EU agri-food exports reached 20.1 billion euros in September, a 13% increase from August and 4% higher than September 2024. Since January, cumulative exports totaled 177.4 billion euros, an increase of 2.6 billion euros (+1%) compared to 2024, mainly driven by higher export prices for cocoa and coffee. The United Kingdom remained the largest market for EU exports between January and September, accounting for 23% of the total (41.5 billion euros).
