Recent reports from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture indicate a noticeable increase in EU citrus imports from September 2021 to January 2022, with a 4.6% increase compared to the same period in the previous year and a 1.5% increase compared to the five-year average. A total of 824,019 tons of citrus was imported, including 353,660 tons of oranges, 203,943 tons of mandarins, and 160,000 tons of lemons. However, grapefruit imports saw a decrease of 38.3%. South Africa emerged as a dominant exporter of oranges and mandarins, while Egypt and Morocco also contributed significantly to the orange exports. The increase in lemon imports is largely attributed to higher shipments from South Africa and Argentina, and Turkey remained the leading non-EU supplier of lemons despite a decline in its shipments.
