In 2023, potato farmers in Northwest Europe experienced significant crop losses due to adverse weather, high disease pressure, and increased costs. The Association of Potato Growers in Northwest Europe (NEPG) reported a loss of around 11,000 ha of crops and at least 650,000 tons of potatoes, causing futures prices on the European market to rise to EUR 37.50 per 100 kg. Despite these challenges, Belgium saw an 18 percent increase in potato production, while the Netherlands experienced a 14.9 percent decrease compared to 2022.
