The European Commission and Thailand have started the fifth round of trade negotiations, aiming to conclude a free trade agreement by the end of the year. However, concerns have been raised by Spain about the potential inclusion of tuna in the deal. Alfonso Rueda, the president of the government of Galicia, has advocated for the exclusion of tuna, given that Spain is the largest European tuna catcher. The European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture reports that tuna is the most consumed fish in the EU, with Spain accounting for 88% of European tuna catches. Thailand is the world's largest preserved tuna exporter, but its exports to the EU are currently limited due to a 24% tariff. Europêche has cautioned that the removal of these tariffs could lead to a significant increase in imports, potentially threatening European sustainable fleets.
